Wellbeing in the Workplace for World Mental Health Day

Earlier this month I went from the quiet of my treatment room in Hook Hampshire, to a large corporate environment, where I provided Indian Head Massage treatments to the staff. The wellbeing day was arranged to promote and support World Mental Health Day - Suicide Prevention (the theme of this years' day).

I have worked with this company on many occasions and was pleased to see, yet again, a fully booked treatment schedule for the day. What I love about these days is that you get to meet people who wouldn't ordinarily come to you for a treatment in their personal time, outside of work - and I refer mostly to men here. The percentage of men to women who book a full Reflexology, Reiki or Indian Head Massage treatment with me outside of the corporate world is approx 20/80, however, surprisingly, when I do workplace events it's more like 40/60. When I've raised this interesting fact with them, most say that they simply don't think about their wellbeing in the same way that women do, and they just don't seem to be able to make or justify the time. Yet, when their company are providing wellbeing services, in the convenience of their offices, a 20 minute treatment is completely doable.

I always begin my treatments with a little mindfulness to aid with relaxation. It's about being able to clear your mind for the time you spend in the treatment and letting go of the thousands of thoughts wizzing round in your mind (especially at work!). The relaxing music playing in the background helps focus and calm the mind. It's amazing how incredibly relaxed and refreshed employees are from the time they enter the room to when they leave.

Now, I also want to mention that I am not, nor do I claim to be a qualified councillor or mental health professional, but I can listen! And listening is just what so many people want and need during a treatment (even if they don't realise it at first).  During the course of the day, so many people 'get things off their chest' or open up to me about things that completely surprise them, but that's fine - everything I do is completely confidential and anything discussed stays between the employee and myself. I have a referral list of other healthcare professionals that I can pass on to employees/clients should they request a recommendation, or if I feel it would be beneficial for someone to seek further help or advice, I will make a recommendation.

Mental Health is such an important subject and thankfully it's on so many people's radar nowadays thanks to many of the amazing charity groups out there, such as mind.org.uk and mentalhealth.org.uk (The World Mental Health Foundation).

Holistic therapies have proven to have such a positive effect on mental health sufferers as they promote balance and wellbeing both physically and mentally and are amazing at targeting stress and anxiety, along with many other ailments such as:

• Pain • Hormonal issues • Digestive problems • Circulation • High blood pressure • Supporting pregnancy • Fertility • Headaches & migraine.
